Marcus Whitfield (’06) still remembers the exact hallway conversation that set the direction for the next twenty years of his career. “A professor told me, almost in passing, that the skills I was learning would matter more outside the classroom than in it. I didn’t understand what she meant until years later.”
After graduating, Marcus took a junior role at a small regional firm, expecting to stay a year or two. Instead, he stayed five, working his way into a leadership position before eventually founding his own consultancy. Today he leads a team of over thirty people and still credits his time at Emerson with shaping how he approaches problems.
“The specific tools I use have changed completely since I was a student,” he says. “What hasn’t changed is the way I was taught to think — ask the bigger question first, then work backwards.”
Marcus now returns to campus most years to speak with current students. “I want them to see that this degree isn’t a straight line to one job. It’s a foundation you can build almost anything on.”
